Eugene Oregon native Teri Irwin, the ‘Crocodile Hunter’ Steve Irwin’s widow appeared on Good Morning America this morning announcing that their daughter Bindy had agreed to represent a youth campaign as a brand ambassador for SeaWorld parks.  This announcement created a firestorm on social media as animal advocates denounced Teri as tarnishing the reputation of Steve Irwin for what appeared to be a cash grab.  Steve Irwin is memorialized for his conservancy efforts by having one of Sea Shepherds ships named in honor.  Sea Shepherd is one of the most notorious direct action activist groups in the fight against illegal whaling and gained notoriety through the broadcast of “Whale Wars” chronicling their efforts to stop Japanese ‘research’ whaling.

Portland Oregon based SeaWorldPledge.org has been fighting a David vs. Goliath campaign against SeaWorld for the attention of youth.  The organizations goal is to inform youth about the issues surrounding keeping Cetacean in captivity for display.  SeaWorldPledge has garnered the attention of NGO’s, celebrities and activist groups for their educational content in opposition to marine mammal captivity.  Despite not being funded, the organization typically sees several thousand visits to it’s website and nearly five thousand youth from around the country have ‘Taken the Pledge’ not to go to a whale or dolphin show.  In response, SeaWorld has taken to paid tweets and Facebook ads encouraging viewers to go to their ‘Truth” page.
